The IMA North and Midlands Launch

On a sumptuous sunny day, overlooking the lush green pitch of the Reebok Stadium, the Iraqi Medical Association UK launched its North and Midlands branch. A re-launch may be a more correct term as many of those present have been active members of the IMA in these regions since its inception more than 30 years ago. Nevertheless, they were joined by new and younger faces from across the UK, from London, Wales and Glasgow, bound together by a desire to pool their skills, time and effort towards supporting colleagues and patients in the UK and Iraq.
Those present heard about the activities of various members including Ammar Al-Diwani who was involved in a recent dental humanitarian trip to Najaf, Dr. Walid Al-Wali’s impressive educational work across Iraq as well as a vision for the Student Iraqi Medical Association (North) by Dr. Hadeel Hasan. There was a chance to learn about the IMA’s Expert Network and the exciting new telemedicine project as well as the Regional Strategy of which this launch was an initial step. Elections soon beckoned and the audience heard from each nominee before the votes were cast…
The new IMA North and Midlands Committee is:
- Dr. Salam Ismael (Chair)
- Dr. Rafid Al-Mahfoudh (Secretary)
- Dr. Hussain Al-Saffar (Communication Officer)
- Dr. Atheel Al-Ansari (Membership Officer)
- Dr. Hussain Awni (Events Officer)
- Dr. Hadeel Hasan (Scientific/Education Officer)
- Sermed Mezher (Student Officer)

A delicious three-course meal and an at times hilarious raffle draw completed an enjoyable and productive event. One that marks a new chapter in IMA’s history and goes towards fulfilling the organisations vision of representing all UK-based Iraqi health professionals regardless of their backgrounds or geographical location.
