AGM 2011

Event summary:
The IMA Conference was held on the 30th July at the Radisson in Heathrow. Themed on Iraq’s Healthcare System, the event attracted a high calibre of speakers and an equally high amount of interest. The proceedings got under way with a presentation by the interim EC that was delivered by Dr. Ahmed Alshafi and chaired by Dr. Ameir Al-Mukhtar. Following an outline of the achievements of the interim EC, that included a new constitution, events and more importantly a renewed stability in the organisation, the floor was opened for free and frank discussion from the members.
More details:

The first guest presentation was by Ahmed Al-Baghdadi, Iraq’s Deputy cultural attaché to the UK. He outlined the role of his office with regards to general cultural matters but also the pivotal role they played for the hundreds of students sent from Iraq to study here. He identified two areas where the IMA may be of assistance to his office. Firstly, a clarification of the postgraduate and professional qualifications which doctors receive in this country in order to ensure doctors receive the recognition they deserve in Iraq. Secondly, the IMA’s network of doctors could provide much needed advice in terms of referral of students who develop health problems in the UK.

The presentations that followed were focused on Iraq’s health system. They were designed to provide IMA members with a background to the latest developments in Iraq’s health system but also to provide a platform for Iraqi doctors to share their expertise and experiences and create opportunities for collaboration in the future.

Dr. Ameir al-Mukhtar, on behalf of Dr. Salam Ismail, delivered a presentation on the issues and challenges faced by Iraq’s health system currently and gave the audience a chance to get up to speed with the context and overall picture. This was followed by an equally enlightening presentation on issues of health economics from Dr. Kamal Field, from the Iraq Institute for Economic Reform. Dr. Yasser Haba, an oncologist practicing in Portsmouth, delivered a presentation on his experiences in Iraq and latest developments there. This was followed by Dr. Maadh Aldouri from the Iraqi Medical Society International who outlined his work in Iraq in the area of pathology through the Intercollegiate Iraq Liaison Group. Dr. Walid Al Wali, a medical microbiologist practising in Rotherham concluded the presentations with an overview of his experiences in Iraq.

With such a packed and engaging programme, members and guests were then able to unwind, network and catch up with old friends over a sumptuous three course meal in the evening. In many ways it was a fitting way to end an insightful and enjoyable day with the IMA.
