The IMA UK Advisory Council provides advice and guidance to the National Executive Committee (NEC) and is comprised of past NEC members who have served a full two year term.
Dr Alshafi has worked on reforming the IMA UK since 2009; playing a key role in updating the constitution and actively encouraging non-medical professionals such as dentists, pharmacists, nurses and students to get more involved. Testimony to this is their increased activity within the IMA UK most of whom have become members. He was elected as President of the IMA UK for the term 2011-2014. His vision is for a representative, inclusive, open, professional, democratic body that serves the members interests. Dr Alshafi offers a fresh approach to an established organisation such as the IMA UK. He endeavours to listen and serve members’ interests within its remit as a professional body.
Haider graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 2007. He currently works as a Research Fellow in London. He has had fleeting involvement with the IMA in the past, most notably as a cofounder of the Student IMA. He hopes to help organise and modernise the IMA, and to increase its user base and help the IMA provide more to its members and medical care in Iraq
Graduated from Imperial College, London in 2006. During his time in University, he was one of the founding members of the Imperial College Iraqi Society, holding positions as treasurer and vice-president. His determination to pursue social, charitable and academic activities within the UK Iraqi community in professions allied to Medicine was a driving factor in his role as a co-founder of SIMA, where he orchestrated a number of successful teaching activities. Since graduating, he undertook his initial training in the North West Thames Deanery where he successfully held yearly medical finals tutorials. He is currently working as an Academic Gastroenterology Registrar in the Wales Deanery where he is undertaking a PhD in the Molecular Carcinogenesis of Oesophageal Cancer. His passion for networking and teaching led him back to the IMA in 2011 where he was successfully elected as the Regional Officer. His interests in this role are to unite Iraqi medical professionals throughout the UK, and continue his immense enthusiasm for teaching to the SIMA groups. In his spare time, Hasan’s main hobby is spending time with his wife and newly born daughter. Oh, and he is an avid Chelsea fan (but don’t get him started!)
